Beachwood "Mathletes" Take 1st Place at Local Contest

Feb. 21, 2015 – Seven teams of Beachwood fifth and sixth graders took the top honors at the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics fifth and sixth grade math contest, held at John Carroll University on February 21.

While most fifth and sixth graders were sleeping in (again), four teams of Beachwood fifth graders and three teams of sixth graders were wielding calculators and pencils in a classroom at JCU.
For two and a half hours, they completed team and individual events that comprised problem-solving, mental math, applications and a construction activity.

Teams scoring in the top 20 percent receive a Trophy award, those scoring in the next 40 percent earn a Champion Award blue ribbon and the last 40 percent earn a Special Award red ribbon. This year there were a total of six sixth grade teams and 11 fifth grade teams. Beachwood teams earned first place in both grade levels and, in fact, took home all of the trophies.

Students were coached by math teachers Laura Gibson, Shelly Lewis, Amy Hazelton and Carole Katz.
