7th & 8th Graders Dominate Local Math Contest

March 7, 2015 – All five Beachwood Middle School teams took home medals - including first place awards in both seventh and eighth grades - at the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics 7th and 8th grade math contest at Laurel School on March 7.

Five teams comprising 14 BMS students competed against mostly private, independent and parochial school students. For two hours, students grappled with "Six Places to Start,” tackled the "Mental Math,” successfully avoided stumbling on the "Hurdles,” and sorted out the "Pile.”

In this contest, each student wins an award, with the top 20 percent of teams receiving a medal. All five Beachwood teams earned medals. A total of 25 seventh and eighth grade teams competed.

BMS eighth grade participants were Patrick McCourt, Gal Pinhasi, Abby Bendis, Jing Jing Shen, and Julia Woomer. Seventh graders were Erika Jung, Bridget Lee, Sophia Park, Parker Gill, Nikhil Murali, Tyler Stovsky, Gabe Colmenares, James Flowers, and Ben Greysukh. Students were coached by Beachwood math teachers Michelle Karim and Carole Katz.
