Treblinka Memorial Letter to Families

May 16, 2023

Beachwood Middle School ELA teachers Carrie Shapiro and Kate Vitek are traveling to Poland June 18 - 26 with Classrooms Without Borders. During the trip, they will visit Treblinka Memorial Site, once a concentration camp located one hour outside of Warsaw. The grounds include 216 stones displaying the names of the cities and towns from which Jews were transported to Treblinka. The stones symbolize matzevot – Jewish headstones – and visitors pay tribute to those murdered during the Holocaust by laying small rocks of their own on the memorial stones.

Ms. Shapiro and Ms. Vitek are collecting stones from Beachwood community members who want to honor those commemorated at the Treblinka Memorial site. They will place each stone on the memorials when they visit this site.

If you would like to have a stone placed in honor of those killed in the Holocaust, please bring a stone to Beachwood Middle School before Friday, June 2 where a collection box will be located inside the front office. Ms. Shapiro and Ms. Vitek cannot transport more than one stone per Beachwood family.
