Beachwood Middle School math team excels in state, national competitions

Club advisor Amy Hazelton praised students’ perseverance and dedication during a May 23 presentation to the Beachwood City Schools Board of Education.“Just as athletes train to do well,” said Hazelton, “these students train for these competitions."The Math Counts Club provides enrichment to students in grades six, seven, and eight. During the 2021-2022 season, students competed in four rigorous competition series. In addition to the Ohio Math League and Noetic Learning Math Contest, students participated in the Mathcounts and American Mathematics Competitions.Eighth-grader Jiahe Liu made “Beachwood history,” according to Hazelton, after receiving perfect scores in each competition. Liu was awarded $3,500 for capturing first place in the written portion of the National MathCounts competition. “What an unbelievable year you’ve had,” said Superintendent Robert Hardis to Liu. “I’m sure it’s just the start.” Coach Amy Hazelton honors student Jiahe Liu
Beachwood Middle School honored more than 50 students in the Math Counts Club for achieving top rankings in grade-level and individual math competitions.
Among the club’s notable accomplishments, the eighth-grade team took first place in both the Ohio Math League and Mathcounts Northeast Ohio competitions. The sixth-grade team also excelled in the Ohio Math League competition, ranking first place in Cuyahoga County and second in the State of Ohio. Seven students across all grades ranked in the top 10 percent of the nation in the Noetic Learning Math Contest.
