This week’s Bison Staff Spotlight features social studies teacher Missy Buddenhagen. As an educator, Ms. Buddenhagen is passionate about helping all students feel welcome, respected and valued. She serves as the advisor of the BMS Gender Sexuality Alliance and is an energetic advocate for students.
“We create a space where kids can get together socially and further their education,” said Ms. Buddenhagen. The GSA partners with the Student Council and other student organizations to socialize, coordinate school-wide events and participate in community service.
“Being an ally is just as important,” she said. “Students want to know how to support their friends.”
Each year, students in the GSA choose a project that reflects their shared interests and goals. Last year, students expressed the desire for more inclusive library books. In collaboration with the library team, students researched dozens of fiction and nonfiction titles featuring middle-grade themes and characters in the LGBTQ community.
“It was important for our students to select books that interested them,” commented Ms. Buddenhagen. “We were really proud to make such an important addition to our library offerings and love the idea of making sure every student can find themselves represented in our library offerings.”
