Beachwood High School's robotics team won the Buckeye Regional Imagery Award for best integration of its theme, “FIRST Responders,” into its robot, pit design and uniforms at the FIRST Robotics competition, held at Cleveland State’s Wolstein Center on March 29-30.

FIRST Robotics is "the varsity Sport for the Mind." It combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.  It’s as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.

This year’s competition was to throw Frisbees into goals of three different heights. Bonus points could be earned at the end of each match for climbing a tower. Teams have six weeks to build their robots. Beachwood’s Team 695 worked in “build teams” to assemble specific components of the robot, such as the shooting mechanism, chassis, programming, and the climbing mechanism. Each part had to be designed and drawn on CAD (computer-aided design) software before building.

Also, a marketing team worked on this year's theme, designed the uniform, and solicited sponsors. Sponsors include Envision Radio Networks, A-1 Manufacturing, Parker Hannifin, PTC, NASA, Ashton Technology Solutions, the Metal Store and Subway. The team also received donations from Subway, Zeppe's, and Chipotle.
