Girls Track and Field Team Wins OHSAA State Championship; Boys Team Turns in Top-25 Performance

BEACHWOOD, OH – The Beachwood High School girls track and field team won the OHSAA Division IV State Championship over the weekend in Columbus, scoring 53 points to secure the third state title in program history (2017, 2018, 2026). In addition, the boys track and field team turned in an outstanding performance, tying for 25th place in Division III.

The girls team sent four student-athletes to the state meet - Meena Abdul Basser, Kyrsten Ginn, K’Dyn Harris-Tate, and Marley Readance. The quartet showcased their talent and speed across multiple events, accumulating points throughout the day to secure the state title before they even competed in their final event, the 4x800-meter relay.

Harris-Tate and Readance put the first points on the board for the Bison by finishing first and fifth in the 100-meters. Harris-Tate ran a 12.56, while Readance clocked in with a time of 13.00. Next up was the 4x200-meter relay where the team blistered the field with a state-record time of 1:39.86, four seconds better than this year’s runner-up.

Abdul-Basser continued the Bison onslaught with a state title in the 400-meters with a time of 54.77 and followed that up with her second title of the day in the 200-meters with a time of 25.16. Harris-Tate was right behind her teammate with a time of 25.24 to finish second in the event.

Those 18 points ensured Beachwood secured enough points to win the state title before the four student-athletes hit the track for their final event of a busy day where they clocked a 4:08.56 to place eighth in the 4x400-meter relay.

Following the state championship performance, head coach Willie Smith said, “I am just thankful to be blessed with these magnificent young women and my outstanding coaching staff. We work together and these girls work hard every day. They are a special group of young women. We don’t talk a lot about moments like this, we just focus on preparing each day and let that carry us.”

The boys team also turned in several podium-finishes to score 10 points in the Division III meet and place in the top-25.

Luke Warner opened the competition by placing fourth in the state in the 200-meter dash while establishing a new school record with a time of 22.00. Senior Peter Adobamen followed with a remarkable performance in the 800-meter run, finishing fifth in the state and setting a school record with a time of 1:53.55.

The boys wrapped up the state meet with an eighth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The relay team of Adobamen, Highley Devine, Tristan Brown, and Braylon Moultrie posted a time of 3:24.45.

The weekend in Columbus concluded a memorable season for the track and field programs as both teams showcased their talent, dedication, and competitive spirit that defines Beachwood track and field.
