BMS Student Qualifies for National History Day National Competition

BEACHWOOD, OHBeachwood Middle School student Mia Woodley has earned a spot on the national stage by qualifying for the National History Day finals and will represent BMS and Ohio at the national competition in Washington D.C. from June 14-18.

Competing with a student from Orchard Middle School in Solon, Woodley placed first at the regional and Ohio state-level National History Day competitions in the Junior Division Group Performance category.

This year’s theme was Revolution, Reaction, and Reform. Woodley and her partner centered their project around the legal women’s rights revolution brought about through the landmark case Moritz v. Commissioner, highlighting how a gender discrimination case argued on behalf of a man helped spark broader progress in women’s rights.

The project involved many months of primary source research and interviews with leaders across the country who are connected to the topic, including Nina Totenberg, Ellie Smeal, and Anne Schlafly, among others.

Congratulations Mia and we wish you the best as you prepare to compete on the national stage.
