Beachwood Medical Academy’s Summer Experiences

BEACHWOOD, OH – The Beachwood Medical Academy continues to shape the next generation of healthcare leaders through its four-year program that combines traditional academic coursework with hands-on immersion experiences and seminars from leading healthcare experts. Last week, students participated in summer experiences at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, the Cleveland Foodbank, and University Hospitals Ahuja Hospitals.

The week began with 20 students participating in the Anatomy and Physiology class and a field trip to the CWRU cadaver lab. Students rotated through five stations - heart, brain, lungs, digestive, and musculoskeletal - and were guided by graduate students from the Physician Assistant program. One of the highlights was the opportunity for students to hold and examine a human brain and heart.

At the Greater Cleveland Foodbank, students participated in a poverty simulation and learned about the adverse effects of poverty on healthcare. Following the simulation, they volunteered their time to help those in need and packaged more than 5,000 pounds of food for distribution throughout the community.

The week concluded at Ahuja Medical Center where students participated in heart and lung dissections, an ultrasound demonstration, and CPR. They also heard lectures from sports medicine, hospital administration, nursing, urology, and neurosurgery, gaining critical insights into a variety of medical careers.

“I am grateful to have established wonderful partnerships with the Case Western School of Medicine, the Cleveland Foodbank, and Ahuja,” Linda LoGalbo, Director of Curriculum and Instruction said. “These experiences provide our students with real-world experiences and valuable insight into careers in the medical field.”
