Beachwood High School Achieves College Board’s Female Diversity Award
Beachwood High School is a proud recipient of the College Board’s Female Diversity Award for expanding female representation in AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles.
The award recognizes 1,153 schools that increased female enrollment in AP computer science during the 2023-24 school year. Beachwood is one of just 69 schools honored for both courses. Schools qualify by achieving at least 50% female enrollment in AP computer science or by having the percentage of female exam takers match or exceed the school's overall female population.
“We’re honored that Beachwood High School earned this distinction,” says Principal Paul Chase. “We appreciate the dedication of AP computer science teachers John Kaminski and Craig Alexander for expanding opportunities for young women to achieve success in computer science education and careers.”
Broadening access to computer science courses drives innovation, creativity, and representation in high-paying STEM industries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for computer and mathematical occupations was $104,200 in 2023. Yet, women accounted for just 26.9% of the 6.5 million professionals employed in these fields, according to the College Board.
“Computer science is the source code of our economy and much of the career landscape,” says Trevor Packer, head of the College Board AP Program. “In the seven years since we began the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award, it’s been heartening to see schools like Beachwood High School welcome so many more young women into this vital field.”
