The African American Affinity Group collaborated with the City of Beachwood to host the community's first-ever Juneteenth celebration on June 19, 2023.  Juneteenth commemorates the day enslaved people in Texas learned they were free on June 19, 1865. Hundreds gathered for the celebration, which featured 30 vendors, face painting, balloon twisting, and outdoor games. Beachwood Middle School students opened the festivities by singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the Black National Anthem. Guests spent the afternoon mingling, dancing, and playing on the playground adjacent to the Beachwood Family Aquatic Center.
