Three Beachwood Teams Place at DI Globals
Three Beachwood Teams Place at DI Globals
May 26, 2013 – Three teams had Beachwood's highest-ever finishes at the Global Destination ImagiNation Finals, May 22-25, at the University of Tennessee.

Hilltop Elementary School's fifth grade team, competing for the first time this year, placed 11th out of 76 teams and just missed being recognized at the awards ceremony for placing in the top 10. BMS's eighth grade team placed 13th out of 74, while the seventh grade team, which won the state tournament in April, placed 18th out of 83 teams at Globals.

The three teams advanced to Globals by placing in the top three teams of their respective categories at the state competition, held April 20, in Mt. Vernon. At the state tournament, BMS’s seventh grade Adelman-Rodriguez team placed first in its fine arts “In Disguise” challenge, while BMS’s eighth grade Waxman-Lenz team placed third in its “Wind Visible” challenge.

Hilltop’s fifth grade Jung-Malul team initially missed qualifying for Globals, finishing fourth in its “In the Zone” challenge, but was invited to compete when another qualifying team announced that it is unable to attend Globals.

The fourth grade Clar-Isaacson team placed sixth at States in its “Wind Visible” challenge, which explored the science of wind energy.

All four Beachwood teams qualified for the state Destination ImagiNation tournament by finishing in first place in their respective age divisions and competitions at the regional tournament in March. Twelve Beachwood teams participated in the Regional tournament – eight from Hilltop and four from BMS – with 10 of those teams placing fourth or higher.

Destination Imagination is an educational program in which student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments. In working to solve challenges, the teams learn important life skills such as collaboration, conflict resolution, creative and critical thinking, and
time management.
