BMS Students Place at Local Math Competitions

Beachwood Middle School’s MATHCOUNTS team finished in fourth place at the regional competition and three eighth graders received the highest possible award at another competition.

BMS’s fourth place MATHCOUNTS team members include Rachelle Khrapunovich, Swathi Srinivasan, Jason Wu, and Yuke Zheng. Joshua Bialosky, Aryeh Carmi, Kathleen Fullerton, and Hannah Leland and attended and competed individually. MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee”-style contests.

Eighth graders Kathleen Fullerton, Hannah Leland, and Jodi Shapiro received the highest award possible at the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ annual 7th and 8th grade math contest on March 3. Each received a medal for their accomplishments. Seventh graders Sean Waxman-Lenz and Yuke Zheng also earned medals for placing in the highest possible group, and seventh graders Kalina Pateva, Jennifer Yen, and Rachel Zhang earned blue ribbons for their performance.

The purpose of GCCTM contest is to stimulate interest in mathematics among middle school students. Students are challenged in an energizing and competitive setting and recognized for their interest, perseverance, and talent in mathematics. Students work together in teams on four events during the contest.
