High School Varsity Track ALEXANDRIA DEVAUGHN Sprinter
This week's Bison Athlete of the Week is Junior, Alexandria DeVaughn. Last week, Alex led the Bison to a second place finish at the Chagrin Valley Conference Track Meet. Alex was one of Beachwood's shining stars as she placed first in four events (400 Meter Dash, 200 Meter Dash, 4x200 Meter Relay, and the 4x400 Meter Relay) One of the most exciting races of the day was the Girls 2x200 Meter Relay in which Alex made up a difference of 20 meters to give the Lady Bison the victory. Alex was also recognized by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as this Friday's edition of the "Plain Dealer Track Athlete of the Week." "This is a fantastic accomplishment for Alex, which is well deserved, explains Head Coach, Willie Smith" Alex is a great addition to our track team. She moved to Beachwood at the start of the school year and has made a strong impact on our track team in many different ways. She is a tenacious and focused worker that pushes herself to be the best. Alex has been the missing link that we have been waiting for a number of
years. She is a perfect compliment to the other athletes on the team and has helped push our team to a higher level. The entire coaching staff is so proud of her and the other teammates for their efforts this season. Our success wouldnt be what it is without Alex on the team.
Also, worthy of note, senior standout, Olivia Mayfield, also competed and finished in first place in four events. She defended her title in the Long Jump, and pulled of a upset victory in the High Jump, won the 100 Meter Dash, and anchored the 4x100 Meter to victory. High School Varsity Tennis Ellis Cohen and Kaustav Malik First Doubles Team
This week's Bison Athletes of the Week are Senior, Ellis Cohen and Freshman, Kaustav Malik. Last week, Ellis and Kaustav captured the Chagrin Valley Conference Tennis Championship by placing First in First Doubles competition. They defeated Kenston in the semi finals and Chagrin Falls in the Championship match. They won both matches in straight sets. The Chagrin Valley Conference is regarded by many, as the best tennis conference in the State of Ohio.
During the course of the season, Ellis and Kaustav have been dominant as a doubles team improving their doubles record to 5-0. Ellis has played the majority of his matches at 1st Singles, where his record was 4-4. Kaustav has been incredible at doubles posting a record of 11-0 the season. "Ellis and Kaustav are a good combination for doubles; Kaustav has a strong forehand that takes opponents out-wide allowing Ellis to put-away the return. Kaustav is steady from the baseline that matches well with Ellis' aggressive and powerful serve and volley game. Both young men are excellent students and strong leaders, which is very obvious when they play tennis," explains Head Coach, David Cole.
"Ellis has had a very good senior season going 4-4 at 1st Singles and an undefeated record at 1st Doubles. Ellis is a great athlete, as he has excelled in both tennis and basketball. Many of Ellis' opponents this season are all year round tennis players. It is not easy for an excellent basketball player, such as Ellis to play 1st Singles against kids who play Tennis all year round. He is very athletic and skilled. He makes it difficult for his opponents to pass or lob over at the net due to his height and wing span. Ellis plans on attending Wisconsin in the Fall.
Kaustav had an excellent freshmen season. He has a high ceiling when it comes to his potential as a tennis player. He has an strong forehand, a keen sense of the game and a strong competitive nature. I look forward to having him on the team for the next three seasons. Kaustav is also a member of the Boys Soccer team. |

This was huge win for us and I am so proud of these kids and of Ari. Ari played a fantastic against Independence. Their defense had an extremely difficulty time trying to stop him when he carried the ball. He is a very fast and explosive running back who does a great job of finding the holes” states Head Coach, Ryan Williams.
Ari is an incredible athlete, starring at both running back and corner back. This season he has rushed for almost 600 yards this season and is on track to break his personal record of 1150 yards, in which he rushed for last season. Although he is not the largest player on the field, he plays like he is 6'5" 250 pound. His tireless work ethic has rubbed off on his teammates which have helped make our football team a lot better. Ari has also transformed himself into a very good cornerback, which is a new defensive position for him this season in which he has recorded 17 tackles for the season, 11 of which are solo. Ari is a jack of all trades for our team as he also handles our kickoffs and consistently kicks the ball inside the 10 yard line. Ari is a two year letter winner. Last season Ari was voted 1st Team All-Chagrin Valley Conference, Running Back. Ari is a member of the Beachwood Indoor and Outdoor track and field teams, where he is a standout track athlete. It is a wonderful group of kids, explains Head Coach, Will Cumpstone.” All of these guys have led the team during one or more of the teams nine matches. Adam Moss the teams 6th man, has helped in two matches and has made the most significant individual improvement from this season to last season. The team has lowered its 18 hole average by 15 strokes and is looking and hoping to make a run to the OHSAA District Championships.” Last season, Josh Blaustein was the lone Bison golfer to advance to the District tournament and the team finished 5th, just one place out of qualifying for the District tournament as a team. Our goal this year is to move on to the District Finals and advance a few individuals to States.” The Bison will take on Perry High School today at 4PM at Highland Golf Course. |

September 5, 2011 ISAIAH WATTS Boys Varsity Cross Country
Senior Isaiah Watts recently won 1st Place at the Orange High School Cross Country Invitational with a time of 18:24. The team finished 3rd overall. This was the best performance that I have seen from Isaiah since I started coaching him three years ago. He gets better each time he competes. He is a very strong competitor and is dedicated to getting better each day. Isaiah is a three year letter winner for the Varsity Cross Country team. Last year he was named Team Co MVP along with William Wolkoff. This year he is Co-Captain of the Boys team and a fantastic team leader. He has really matured this year as a cross country runner. He has a very diligent work ethic and this has enabled him to be incredibly competitive with the best runners in Northeast Ohio. He has shown tremendous leadership this year in his work ethic and encouragement of the other runners on the team. It is truly a pleasure to coach such a wonderful young man, states Head Coach Jamie Lader. Isaiah is also a standout on the Varsity Basketball team and the Track team and excels in the classroom. |
