Wacky Wednesday

In celebration of Right to Read Week, we had a blast with Wacky Wednesday today! Check out the slideshow to see pictures of the wackiness going on in the room.  You will notice some with their clothes on backwards, mismatched clothes and shoes, some grew facial hair over night, girls dressed as boys and boys with ponytails in their hair and the list goes on and on.  Mother Nature made the day even wackier by giving us snow in the middle of April!  We'll be back to normal tomorrow!
Subtraction with Regrouping

We have been spending some time working on subtracting 2 numbers with 2 or more digits.  This tends to be a difficult concepts to grasp right away so we will be practicing it from now until the end of the year.  We use a little rhyme to help us remember what to do...

More on the top?
No need to stop.

More on the floor?
Go next door, get 10 more.

Numbers the same?
Zero's the game.

Another strategy that we use to help us with these problems is to draw out base-10 blocks.  This helps the students visually see what they are doing when they borrow.
Exploring Air

In science we did an experiment to see if air takes up space.  Before the experiment, many of us predicted that it did not take up space.  We learned that indeed it does!
The Important Book...rewritten by Mrs. Lemieux's class

At the beginning of the year, we read the book The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown.  We then rewrote and published our own version of the book.  Check our retold book below!
Introducing iPod Touches!!

Today was such an exciting day in our classroom!  We were able to use iPod Touches as part of our literacy time this afternoon.  As part of our Daily 5 literacy time, the students have the ability to choose to Listen to Reading.  Until today, students had to listen to the same book as the rest of the group.  Today, with the new technology in hand, students could choose their own book, listen and follow along at their own leisure.  Check out the pictures below!
